Introduction
The Indiana University Gero-informatics Program (GiP) provides

opportunities for fellows to obtain training in gero-informatics, the
application and study of medical informatics in geriatric medicine.
Older adults face many challenges in improving health and obtain-
ing high-quality, comprehensive, coordinated healthcare. Infor-
mation systems and technology provide ways to improve many of
these areas, via better communications and decision support and
collection, processing, and storage of healthcare data.
GiP fosters gero-informatics through the following goals:
  • Advance research and training in gero-informatics.
  • Conduct and advance successful applications of information
  • technology in health and healthcare of older adults.
  • Director, Gero-informatics
    Center for Aging Research
  • Increase local and national recognition of gero-informatics.

    Activities
Our investigators pursue the science of gero-informatics. The
program has also provided and supported implementations of
    Personnel:
several projects in clinical decision support, including ongoing
    Gregory Abernathy, MD
studies of improving prescribing for older adults, and a study in
    Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH
    improving home-based self-management of osteoarthritis.
    Christopher M. Callahan, MD
An education curriculum will be applied to provide medical
    Steven R. Counsell, MD
trainees with knowledge and experience in gero-informatics.
    Andrea Elliott
We are working to disseminate geriatrics educational materials
    Danielle Jaber
to physicians in Indiana, as part of the Geriatrics Education
    William B. Richards
    Network of Indiana.
    Kevin Terrell, DO, MS
In support of clinical service and quality improvement, we provide
and develop internal systems for clinical tracking and collection
of geriatrics-specific health data in conjunction with an electronic
medical record system. This facilitates electronic and automated
    processing and interpretation of results.
    Areas of ongoing projects
    Improving geriatrics consultations
    Remote monitoring
    Our headquarters are located in
    Improving self-management of disease
    Linking data sources
    Indianapolis, Indiana.
    Clinical decision support
    Patient-centered informatics
